Routine exams and screenings are typically once a year, depending on your age, health history, lifestyle, and other important issues. You and your health care provider can determine how often you need to be examined and screened for certain diseases and conditions. These include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, sexually transmitted diseases, and cancers of the cervix, uterus, breast, and ovary. When problems are found early, your chances for successful treatment and cure are increased. Routine exams and screenings can help save lives.
A pap smear used to be recommended for women every year. However, the recommendation has recently changed. You should see your provider every year for well-woman care, breast exams and any reproductive health care or information as directed by your provider. If in doubt whether you need to be seen, ask you physician or midwife.
Regular mammograms are the best test providers have to find breast cancer early. Recommendations state women should have mammograms every two years from 40 to 74 years. Talk to your provider if you have any symptoms or changes in your breast or if breast cancer runs in your family. Your provider may recommend that you have mammograms before age 40 or more often than recommended.
